The Key to Successful Weight Loss - Be Kind to Yourself

For many people weight loss is all about giving something up and being deprived of something. They think "if I stop eating chocolate for a week I am sure to lose some weight." Or they say to themselves "If I am really good and give up all the food I really love, I am sure to lose weight."

Well they are so wrong! When you give up eating a particular food that you enjoy i.e. chocolate, then chocolate becomes your focus. You are constantly thinking about chocolate. Your mind will run something like this..."oh I really miss eating chocolate but I'm going to be really good and not eat any chocolate, then I will lose weight and be beautiful again."

The next day you will be thinking..."oh dear I'm so stressed I could really do with some chocolate, but I'm not going to have any!" The day after you are more stressed then ever and think .... "If only I could have just a tiny piece of chocolate I know I would feel much better, but I'm not going to eat any because I am a strong person!" Two hours later..."surely a small piece of chocolate isn't going hurt - oh but I can't!" One hour later..."chocolate, chocolate, I must have chocolate!" and then..."I'm just a fat greedy pig - chocolate, chocolate!" Half an hour later you are ready to hit someone - anyone! Five minutes later you race down to the shop and buy 6 chocolate bars and spend the next half an hour stuffing your face with chocolate. You feel so relieved and blissed out!

Ok, I know the above is an extreme example, but do you get the picture? Your Weight Loss Problem: How To Cure It By Watching Movies Or Reading Books!

I don't know anything about you but if you're anything like me then you struggle with a weight loss problem. Your weight loss problem consists of you struggling to keep your weight down or struggling to make your weight go down.

Most people who see me wouldn't believe that I have a weight loss problem, but I do. I've battled bulimia and constant gains and losses in weight, of ten pounds each time. Thats what I call a big weight loss problem.

A lot of women and men with the same or a similar weight loss problem would sympathize with me I'm sure. I want to look good (who doesn't?) so that always motivates me to go on a diet.

But after sticking to a diet for a week and dropping the unwanted weight my love for good tasting food overpowers my need to feel attractive and the weight piles back on pound by pound.

There is always exercise to help with a weight loss problem, I remind myself as I lie lazily on the couch chomping down on one of my non-diet treats. "Sure!" I groan "I don't feel like wearing my butt out without seeing any results for weeks at a time."

Whenever I start a workout regimen I only stick to it for a few weeks (usually less) and then I get bored and drop it. So my weight loss problem continues.

How many other women I wondered (or men, for that matter) get bored while exercising? I thought about that for awhile then I set about to find a solution to help all those poor people (and myself too, of course) with this weight loss problem.

First I asked myself: What did I like to do? What did I find Interesting?

"Hmmmm, well" I thought "I like dancing, but long periods of it are exhausting. I like to read, to listen to music, and I really dislike being on my feet for over long periods of time.

What could possibly combine all or most of these to make my exercising interesting and help solve my weight loss problem?

The solution to my weight loss problem was amazingly simple!

I own an old stationary bike, and I do mean OLD, but the important thing is that it operates. You can do this with any form of stationary bike, whether it's a twenty year old model or an up to date model.

It doesn't matter whether you own the stationary bike or use a gym's or your local YMCA's or YWCA's facilities.

My weight loss problem solution is this:

Find something engrossing to read. It could be a novel or your favorite magazine. Or listen to music that you enjoy, you could even use audio books or any different CD's or things you could listen to.

I suppose if your bike was somewhere around a television or computer with a DVD player, you could even watch your favorite movie.

The next step is to mount your stationary bide and start biking while reading or doing any of the above listed activities, and not to get off for at least 45 to 60 minutes, except for an occasional rest every quarter of an hour.

I usually just keep biking away the whole time and sometimes I bike longer because I'm so engrossed in what I'm reading, and I won't allow myself to read it once I'm off the stationary bike.

After a week of this, without change in my eating habits, or any dieting, I'm maintaining a healthy weight. Best of all I'm not putting on any new pounds, and my legs look visibly slimmer.

So I've kissed my weight loss problem goodbye, and I'm saying hello to slim jeans and size 6 dresses, and you can too.

For the first time in a long while I actually look forward to putting on a bikini ;-)

As Dr. Dean Ornish has found repeatedly in studies funded by the National Institute of Health, Mutual of Omaha Insurance and other scientific bodies, we can decrease our weight and increase our health so that we feel more energetic, more flexible and stronger when we have the right tools and support.

Since so many clients, colleagues and friends are constantly struggling with weight loss, I have written this series to provide tools to help readers live in a place of abundant health. Even if you have a hard time believing them at first, try them on. You will probably find they are helpful in the end.

#1: Weight loss is too small a goal to sustain you.

If all you want to do is lose weight, you are only focusing on the negative in your life. You look at the extra fat around your weights or on your hips and measure each and every day to see if any of it goes away. And too often, the measure of your worth becomes the number on the scale. Weight loss is a part of a bigger, more joyful goal to experience abundant health. When we focus on the increased energy as well as greater strength and flexibility that comes when we experience abundant health each step of the journey becomes more alive for us.

#2 - Start Where You Are.

It doesn't make any difference if you are the perfect weight for you or ten times the perfect weight for you, you are a unique gift to yourself and those around you. Waiting until you reach your ideal weight to fall in love with yourself, to let yourself see your own beauty and worth, does no service to anyone. Not only does it slow your weight loss down by increasing depression rates as well as whole slew of neurochemicals that make it harder to lose weight, it also dampens your energy to make the changes you need to get where you want to go. In your life, which has been more sustaining: love or hate? Hate holds us down, keeps us from expressing the fullness of ourselves and stops us from reaching our goals. It doesn't matter if we are hating ourselves or someone else we blame for making us overweight. Loving ourselves just makes more sense.

#3 - You can choose to lose weight and experience abundant health.

We all can. For many of us, somewhere along the road, we have got it in our heads that we are victims. That other people have power over us and that we really don't have control. So we give up our sense of authority to other people who have the answers. But you know your body better than anyone else. When you start to pay attention to what you are eating, how you are feeling and the choices that you are making throughout the day (attention not judgment) you can move towards abundant health and weight loss. I suggest that you remind yourself at the beginning of the day and before every mean, "I can choose to lose weight and experience abundant health." Sometimes you are going to choose to have a piece of chocolate cake and that's fine too. Just understand that you have the power to choose any option you would like in this moment.

#4 - Small changes make a big difference.

Sometimes we fall into a trap that psychologists call "all or nothing thinking." We think that if we are not perfect in our efforts to lose weight and get healthy, than we might as well give up. But even small changes make a big difference. For example, consensus among doctors seems to be that calories really do make a difference in weight loss. To lose weight we either have to eat less calories (which doesn't have to mean eating less food) or burn more. 3500 calories equals one pound. If we simply decease our calories by 100 per day or increase our exercise just a little bit, we would lose 10 pounds in a year without very little effort at all.

#5 - Deprivation doesn't work.

Starving yourself or trying to force yourself to exercise doesn't work. We think it does because most of us have tried some crash diet where we lost weight for a while and then we gained it back. We have blamed our will power rather than the overall strategy. While we can all force ourselves to do something for a little while, overtime this is an exhausting strategy that fails for almost everyone. Finding ways to enjoy what you eat and creating an exercise plan that fits what you like to do is the only way that any of us can sustain lasting change

#6 - You are the expert on your own body.

Diets often fail because they don't fit our bodies. They suggest foods we hate or exercise programs we don't want to do. More importantly, they give away our authority to someone else. We become the passive recipients of someone else's understanding of us. Of course, there is some great information that is true for most people but when you start paying attention to yourself you will be able to create an abundantly healthy lifestyle that is tailored just for you. For example, only you know how you feel after eating a particular type of food. When you start paying attention to your energy levels after eating you will know what feeds your body and your spirit and be able to adjust your eating accordingly. This is only a beginning but try these concepts on for a bit. The more you believe them the easier it will be to reach your goal of abundant health and weight loss. Stress and weight loss don't go together. If you want to drop pounds, you need to get rid of stress. Here's why stress is so bad for you and four ways to reduce your stress so you can become thin.

So what's the deal with stress and fat? Stress makes you fat because of a hormone called cortisol.

Back in the day when your ancestors needed to run from animals that wanted to eat them, their bodies needed a mechanism that would kick in and help them run faster when they were being chased. In these breaks, you can close your eyes for a few minutes and visualize a beautiful place, take deep breaths, watch children or animals playing, watch a funny video, shake our your muscles, or set a timer and take a five minute snooze.

2. Schedule a longer period relaxation time into your day.

Over-stressed people tend to be the ones who never take time for themselves. You need to put self-care on the top of your to-do list. Taking a long hot bath, reading a good book, getting a massage, or sitting outside in the fresh air will actually do more for your efforts to get skinny than more work-outs and starving yourself with restrictive diets.

All the dieting and exercise in the world can't counteract the chemical reactions piling on pounds when you're in a chronic state of tension. You need to give yourself time to de-stress.

3. Laugh.

Make it a point to laugh at least once a day for a couple minutes. Even if nothing's funny, laugh. Your fake laugh will turn into a real one, and even if it stays fake, it can help you. Research has shown that the chemicals released by laughter can relax you and lift your spirits so efficiently, it can feel like you've been drugged. And in a way, you have. The laughter creates feel-good "drugs" in your body.

4. Let it be.

Most of the intense reactions you have to situations in life is caused by wanting to be in control of everything. You can let go of enormous amounts of tension just by making a decision to let it all unfold as it will.

Make the three words, "Let it be," your mantra. You don't have to control it all. Trust in the divine to bring it all together in a way that works out best for everyone. Relax and let go.

When you take these four steps, you'll be surprised how effective they are at helping you get rid of stress. Remember that stress and weight loss don't mix. You need to find some inner peace if you want to drop pounds.

Stress And Weight Loss: Learn Deep Breathing Exercises For Stress To Get Thin

Stress and weight loss don't go together, period. If you want to get thin, try learning deep breathing exercises for stress.

There are many deep breathing benefits, but one of the biggest ones is stress relief. And a corollary to that is the benefit of weight loss.

Because breathing exercises lower stress levels, you can actually increase your metabolism just by breathing. Here are two exercises that can help you burn fat.

1. Ratio Breathing

This breath is easy to learn, and when you combine it with an affirmation, it really can help you get skinny.

Here's how you do it. However many counts you breathe in, for example, four counts, you hold your breath for four times that long. So if you breathe in for four counts, you hold it for sixteen counts. Then you breathe out for two times the number of counts when you breathed in. So in this example, you'd breathe out for eight counts.

The amount of counts you do is up to you. It's a ratio. If you breathe in for three seconds, you hold your breath for twelve seconds and breathe out for six seconds.

I'm not much for counting, so what I do is use an affirmation. When I first started doing this exercise, I used the affirmation, "I'm a sexy, beautiful, slender healthy woman."

So I'd inhale while I thought, "I'm a sexy, beautiful, slender, healthy woman."

I'd hold my breath while I thought that same affirmation four times. Then I'd exhale while I thought it twice.

As my lung capacity increased, I lengthened the affirmation. (One of the great deep breathing benefits is increased lung capacity.) But I kept the same ratio.

The beauty of doing the breath to an affirmation is that it focuses your mind on the way you want to look and feel. So you combine stress relief with weight loss visualization.

2. Alternate Nostril Breathing

This technique is just what the name suggests. You breathe through alternate nostrils.

Place a hand on your nose so your ring and middle fingers are on one side of your nose and your thumb is on the other. Now close off your left nostril with your fingers, and breathe in through your right nostril to a count of four. Pause and then cover your right nostril with your thumb and release your fingers from your left nostril. Breathe out through your left nostril to a count of four. Pause and then breathe in through your left nostril to a count of four. Pause and then cover your left nostril with your fingers and breathe out through your right nostril to a count of four.

This is how you do one round of the exercise. You can do as many rounds as you like, but it's good to do at least five.

Both of these breaths have wonderful calming effects that lower stress levels. By learning these deep breathing exercises for stress, you can stop the stress and weight loss conflict to get thin.

So let's set 100 calories as the calorie expenditure for running 1 mile. That's probably a very conservative estimate for a number of reasons. Factoring in weight, speed, terrain and other variables would most likely increase that number considerably. It looks like a pretty big number, but what does it mean?

The approximate number of calories needed to equal 1 pound is about 3500. Theoretically, eat 3500 calories and you will gain 1 pound; burn off 3500 and you will lose 1 pound. Here's the math, then, using your yearly total: 36,400 divided by 3500 equals over 10 pounds. Everything else being equal, if you continue to eat as you currently are and devote about ½ hour to running 3 to 4 times a week, you can lose 10 pounds next year.
